London Heathrow (LHR) started flights operations in the 1930s as the Great Western Aerodrome. Stansted airport was the fastest-growing major UK airport in what was a record year for air travel in the UK, according to the British Airports Authority, which runs seven national airports. More than 140 million passengers travelled through BAA’s airports last year, up 6.9 per cent on 2003. Passenger numbers at Stansted leapt by 12 %to 20.9 million people.

An extensive taxiway widening, double decker loading ramps with upgraded immigration , gate , lounge and control facilities is under way at London Heathrow airport . Two giant air bridges, one of which is around eight stories off the ground, will connect the double-decker Airbus aircraft's passengers with the terminal building.The cost so far is hovering around £450 million ($840 million).

Heathrow airport will no doubt retain its top ranking position above the world major airports, not only for passenger numbers, but also for quality, service and modern transportation infrastructure deployment.
BAA predicts the A380 will account for one in every eight flights by 2016, boosting passenger numbers without increasing the number of flights.

NEVER leave baggage or personal belongings unattended in or close to the Airport

Disabled Facilities
at British Airports.
All British airports are fully accessible to disabled passengers, allthough airport services do differ, high standards do not, generally, vehicle pick up, drop in, coach boarding, restaurants,toilets, (restroom) and other facilities are specifically provided and catered for by trained staff.
Assisted transportation within the airport is available and can be arranged by prior contacting your aircraft carrier. Boarding and flights assistance to disable passengers is to the highest possible level.
Aisles and security archways allow wheelchairs to pass through, and airport staff will help if necessary.
Flying-with-disability is a site designed to provide impartial information and advice to all disabled people around the world who travel by air.
Travel-Care is an independent free service agency offering assistance to anyone at London Gatwick and Heathrow who has a disability. Travel-Care can be found at Gatwick in The Village, South Terminal, at Heathrow just behind terminal 1, Queen's Building (020 8745 7495). Travel care Operates Monday to Friday from 09.00 - 17.00 and closed Saturday- Sunday and Bank Holidays.

PREVIOUS UK AIRPORTS HAND LUGGAGE RESTRICTIONS at 22 SEPT 2006 - NOW SUPERSEDED
A ban on carrying on cosmetics and liquids not purchased inside airports after security checkpoints remains in place. And passengers flying to the USA still cannot carry any liquids onto aircraft.
One carry-on bag now will be allowed. It can be 22 inches long, 17.7 inches wide and 9.8 inches in depth. Previously, the bag was restricted to 17.7 inches by 13.7 inches by 6.2 inches. Large musical instruments now can be carried on board rather than checked, although some airlines may require passengers to pay for an extra seat.
Women passengers travelling on business will have to put their briefcase or computer in the hold if they wish to carry a handbag onto the plane,other passengers will be restricted to one piece of hand luggage.


- Passengers would be allowed to carry one small bag on flights effective 15 Aug 2006 (please check with your airline, carrier). An item of hand luggage must not be more than 45cm long, 35cm wide and 16cm deep including wheels, handles and side pockets. Items restrictions ( laptops mobile phones etc.) are to be eased, ban on liquids and gels do remain.

Hand luggage -
All cabin baggage will be processed as hold baggage and carried in the hold of passenger aircraft departing UK airports. extra bags (within reasonable weight) now will be carried for free in the hold of the aircraft and wont count against your weight allowance (usually 23kgs).

Electrical Items
This includes battery-powered items such as laptops, mobile phones and iPods - these items will not be allowed in cabins.

Empty Pockets
Nothing may be carried in pockets - all essential items must be carried in a single (ideally transparent) plastic carrier bag.

Passengers may take only the following items through airport security search points in a clear plastic bag :

Wallets - Pocket-size wallets and pocket-size purses plus contents (for example money, credit cards, identity cards, etc (not handbags).

Passports - Travel documents essential for the journey, for example passports and travel tickets.

Medicines - Prescription medicines and medical items sufficient and essential for the flight (eg, diabetic kit), except in liquid form unless verified as authentic.

Glasses - Spectacles and sunglasses, without cases; contact lens holders, without bottles of solution.

Baby items - For those travelling with an infant: baby food, milk (the contents of each bottle must be tasted by the accompanying passenger) and sanitary items sufficient and essential for the flight (nappies, wipes, creams and nappy disposal bags).

Sanitary items - Female sanitary items sufficient and essential for the flight, if unboxed (eg tampons, pads, towels and wipes), tissues (unboxed) and/or handkerchiefs keys (but no electrical key fobs).Contact lens holders, without bottles of solution

Searches
All passengers will be hand searched and their footwear and all the items they are carrying must be x-ray screened.

Pushchairs/Wheelchairs
Pushchairs and walking aids will be x-ray screened, and only airport-provided wheelchairs will be allowed through the screening point.

Toothpaste and ANY and ALL liquids (INCLUDING CONTACT LENSES FLUIDS) will be removed from the passenger. Exceptions will be in place for those travelling with infants and for prescription medicines.
All passengers boarding flights to, or through the USA and all the items they are carrying will be subjected to secondary search at the boarding gate.

Luggage For Hold
No changes to current hold baggage security measures but significant delays at airports were inevitable.

Allow More Time
Passengers are being asked to allow themselves plenty of extra time and to ensure that other than the few permitted items listed above, all their belongings are placed in their hold baggage and checked in.

Luggage: your home address should be placed inside your baggage with your name and destination displayed on a tag on the outside.
Any single piece of checked baggage weighing more than 32kg (70lbs) each will not be accepted at check-in by any airline operating at Heathrow and across all other UK airports. Economy flights may have a smaller allowance, please check your ticket or with the airline.

Hand Luggage is generally limited to one item per person weighing up to 5-7 kgs, maximum size 45cm x 35cm x 20cm. Large items such as musical instrument, skis, golf clubs surf boards and other sport equipment cannot be guaranteed carriage , check with your airline, a charge may apply at check-in.
Pushchairs will be tagged at check-in and a baggage receipt will be issued for later collection on arrival.

If you intend to drive to the airport you will have to drop your vehicle at a fair distance in large, basically unsecure or lightly supervised airport parking lots. Parking fees varies from airport to airport but rest assured thet will not be cheap, even for short stays.


Parking - Driving : Of course parking outside terminals is not allowed and given the security issues involved is strictly forbidden. Fortunately there is a convenient way to park avoiding long walks and high prices, or if you prefer you can forget about the hassle of bringing - picking up your vehicle alltogether and book one of the many airport transfer service available.

Transfers to and from airports can be much cheaper, convenient and comfortable by taxi (cab) if there is more then one passenger traveling,for example the cost can be shared between and up to 6 people hiring a people carrier service. Pick up and drop in services can be hired - booked online. High competiton in this business means luxury cars and driver at very affordable prices .

Airport Meet - Service : on departure A chauffeur meets you outside the terminal and takes your car to security parking lot. On return,a chauffeur meets you with your car outside your terminal.

Airport Park - Ride Service : you drive your car to a specifiedairport car park. Your your luggage will be loaded to a transfer bus, you will be taken by car to your terminal. On your return, you will be met and collected outside your terminal

Customs : BEWARE - NEVER carry anything into the UK for someone else,you will be responsible for it.
For non UK domestic flights a passport is required, it should be valid for a minimum of six months at return date, do bring a photocopy as a precaution in case you lose the original document.
For Internal regional UK flights a recognized photographic ID is required .

At UK airports, travellers depending on what they bought, where and the quantity of the goods that they are bringing in are required to pass through either a red, green and at major UK airports, also a blue channel option.
There is no duty to be paid in the UK on goods (reasonable quantities) that you have bought tax paid in any EU countries for personal use. Large amount of alcohol or tobacco will incurr duties if you are unable to fulfill the HM Custom 'personal use' requirement.
If you are entering the UK from outside the EU you have a limited and much lower allowance

Red channel - if you have goods to declare to Customs or if you are unsure about whether or not you need to declare them.
Green channel - if you do not have any goods to declare.
Blue channel - if you are coming from another EU country and have no goods to declare.

London Heathrow (LHR) Situated 24 km, 15 miles west of the city, the airport has 4 terminals. Links to the city centre are by taxi, train, underground (tube) and bus.

Taxis: There are taxi ranks outside the Arrivals Halls of all four terminals.

Trains: The new Heathrow Express is the fastest way to central London (Paddington Station). Trains leave every 15 minutes from Heathrow Central (for Terminals 1-3) and Terminal 4. Journey time is 15 minutes, add 8 minutes for journeys to or from Terminal 4.

The first train from Terminals 1, 2, 3 is 05.12 am (Monday - Saturday) and 05.08 am (Sunday) from Terminal 4 is 05.07 am (Monday - Sunday). The first train from Paddingtonto Heathrow airport is at 05.10 am. Tickets can be used in either direction. Kids under 5 travel free, 5 to 15 travel at half price.

Tube - Subway: The airport is served by the Piccadilly Line Underground. Trains leave from Heathrow Central (from Terminals 1-3) and Terminal 4. Journey time to central London is about 60 minutes. Tickets can be bought from machines in the baggage reclaim areas of all the terminals as well as in the stations. Bus: The bus service goes to London (Victoria Coach Station) every 30 minutes. Departures from outside the Terminals and journey time is about 60 minutes.

Bus - Coach : National Express coach A2 has 33 services between Heathrow and London every day, as often as 30 minutes. Stops in central London include Hyde Park, Marble Arch, Baker Street, Russell Square and Kings Cross. Most services call at Heathrow Central Bus Station a short walking fromTerminals 1, 2 and 3,ticket desk in at Terminal 4.

LHR Heathrow Airport Terminals

Terminals 1, 2 and 3 are all in the centre of the airport and are within walking distance of each other interconnected by underground (subway) or walk corridors.
Terminal 4 is situated at the south section of the airport building joined to and from the other three terminals via the free Heathrow Express transfer train transportation system link.

Note: Airlines Terminal data subject to changes, since the opening of Terminal 5 there will be terminal transfer effecting a few airlines, British Airways begins operating from Terminal 5 (March 2008)

Terminal 1- Opened 1968, operating with 13 airlines carrying 25.3 million passengers.
All Heathrow's flights domestic and European and long-haul destinations.all domestic flights, including Aer Lingus, British Airways, British Midland, Cyprus Airways, El Al Israel, Finnair, GB Airways, Icelandair, LOT Polish Airlines, Manx Airlines, South African Airways, Virgin Express.

Terminal 2 - Opened 1955, operating with 28 +airlines carrying 9 million passengers.
Most non-UK carriers' flights to Europe and some long haul destinations. Adria Airways, Aeroflot, Aerolineas Argentinas ,Air Algerie, Air France, Alitalia, Austrian Airlines, Avianca, Balkan Bulgarian Airlines, British Midland, Continental Airlines, Croatia Airlines, Cronus Air, Crossair, CSA Czech Airlines, Georgian Airlines, Iberia, Istanbul Airlines ,JAT Yugoslavia, Lufthansa, Luxair ,Malev Hungarian Airlines, Olympic Airways, Royal Air Maroc ,Swissair, Syrian Air, TAP Air Portugal,TAROM Romanian,Tunis Air, Uzbekistan Airways, Virgin Atlantic

Terminal 4 - Opened 1986, operating with 9 airlines carrying 14 million passengers.
Most British Airways long haul flights and some European services. Air Excel, Air Lanka, Air Malta, British Airways, British Mediterranean, Kenya Airways, KLM, Qantas, TAT.

Terminal 5 - Opened 17 of March 2008. Construction of this new terminal started in September 2002, phase one completed and with phase two opening in 2010, Terminal 5c. The project costs are estimated at £4.2 billion, took 18 years to build and is home to 112 shops and restaurants, it's 40m tall and 396m long, features 96 check-in kiosks. It seems that British Airways will have exclusive use of the terminal indeed terminal will handle approximately 90% of British Airways flights.
The building will extend over five floors and cover the size of fifty football pitches . When fully completed it will increase Heathrow passenger handling capacity to above 90 million per year. Terminal 5 has a six platform rail station located underneath the main terminal building, a new extensions to the London Underground Piccadilly Line and Heathrow Express and a spur road linking to the M25, bus and coach station is located at the ground floor. Travelling from the satellite building (Terminal 5b) is by driverless underground Tracked Transit System (TTS).

London Gatwick (LGW) Situated 48 km, 30 miles south of the city. There are 2 terminals and links to the city are by taxi, train and bus. The airport handles in excess of 34 million passengers per year, it has one runaway used by 67 airlines flying to 215 local and worldwide destinantions .

Taxis: Outside Arrivals; journey time to the city centre can take two hours.

Trains: All trains depart and arrive at the South Terminal, right into the airport. The Gatwick Express is the fastest service and goes to Victoria Station directly with no stops in between; trains depart every 15 minutes and the journey time is 30 minutes

A slower, stopping service also goes to Victoria Station, with departures every 15-30 minutes;all stations journey time is about 50 minutes. At Victoria Station there is the largest London underground ( subway ) hub and coach , bus, taxi connections to all parts of the UK . Please note that there are no trains for approximately three hours after midnight.

Thameslink : Rail service connects Gatwick with King’s Cross Station, stopping at : Redhill - East Croydon - London Bridge ( from there on each station has a London city underground - subway connection ) - Blackfriars - City Thameslink - Farringdon - King's Cross. Typical time for the direct Gatwick - London Bridge is 30 minutes. St Pancras Railways station is just a third of a mile way Thameslink has up to four trains an hour between London and Gatwick Airport

Bus - Coach: A Flightline service operates between the airport and central London (Victoria Coach Station); hourly departures and a typical journey time is 2 hours. Gatwick's coach station is at the ground floor of South Terminal with the main services also calling atthe North Terminal. (Connection between the two terminals is by free monorail).
National Express coach service from and to Central London runs 18 times a day - to the main coach station at the South Terminal and to outside the International Arrivals are at the North Terminal
Heathrow-Gatwick transfer services is also available , National Express tickets desk is at the arrivals section at the North Terminal.

LGW Gatwick Airport Terminals

Gatwick Terminals:The two terminals ( North and South ) are linked by a free rapid transit carriage operating every 3 minutes with a journey time of two minutes.

North Terminal handles: British Airways - Adria Airways - Aer Lingus - Air France -Delta Air Lines - Emirates EK - Iberia - Israir - LOT Polish - Royal Air Maroc - plus a few others. A smallnumber of charter flights also use the North Terminal.
South Terminal handles the bulk of Gatwick's traffic, serving domestic, international and charter flights.
Trains do arrive and depart within this terminal, the airport is a floor up easily reached via escalators .

London Stansted (STN) (mispelling : stanstead) Situated 63 km, 39 miles northeast of the city with links to London by train and bus. Twenty four million passengers , 20 airlines, 120+ worldwide destinations.
Stansted's second runway is due to be ready by 2011

Train:Stansted Express, fast train service direct to London (Liverpool Street station); departures every 30 minutes with a journey time of 45 minutes. Stansted Airport's railway station is 2 minutes from the departures lounge ,platforms are 2 floors down

Luggage trolleys are available at the station and lifts and escalators take you in/out from the terminal.
All Stansted Express services call at Tottenham Hale where there is an interchange with the Victoria Line ( London underground - subway) which will take you into the center of the city in 20 minutes.

Bus Coach : A Flightline service operates between the airport and London (Victoria Coach Station); departures every hour and journey time is 90 minutes. National Express coach services connects the airport to the main UK cities,services leave Stratford Bus Station for Stansted every 30 minutes. National Express also run 8 services each way every day between Luton and Stansted.
There are two National Express ticket desks at Stansted, one in Arrivals and in the Coach Station.

Terravision coach service to London Victoria : go to stop 26 in the Stansted airport coach station. The coach will arrives 20-30 minutes prior to the scheduled departure time. Ticket can be purchased from the Terravision desk inside the waiting room at the coach station.
Terravision coach London Victoria to Stansted airport : go to the Stop n° 2 at the Greenline Coach Station on Bulleid way - the coach will arrive about 15 minutes prior to the scheduled departure time.. Ticket purchase it from the Terravision desk inside the Golden Tours travel centre, just around the corner from Bulleid Way.

London Luton (LTN) Opened in 1938, this smaller airport is situated 56 km, 35 miles north of the city. Links to the city are by train and bus. used by 16 airlines flying to approximately 70 destinations. Almost ten million passengers.

Train: Thameslink : Rail service connects to Bedford and Central London St Pancras , journey 32 minutes, there is also a Midland Mainline services to the Midlands . The rail station is not connecting into the airport but a free shuttle bus links the airport with Luton Parkway Rail Station and operates between 0500 and 2300. The journey time is about 10 minutes and the bus is suitable for wheelchair users. There are up to eight Thameslink trains an hour between London and Luton Airport Parkway

Bus Coach: Hourly departures to London (Victoria Coach Station); journey time is 1 hour 15 minutes.
National Express (bays 4-6 in front of the terminal building outside Departures) run services to and from Luton Airport from cities across the country, including Milton Keynes, Coventry, Birmingham and Cambridge. National Express run 8 services each way every day between Luton and Stansted
Green Line Arriva (757) providesa 24 hours frequent service between Central London ( and Green line Victoria Coach Station) and London Luton, view map (pdf format).

London City Airport (LCY) LONDON . Opened in 1987 as the result of the regeneration project of London's Docklands (Docklands Development Corporation), the first year 15,000 passengers used the Airport.
LCY is located 10 km, 6 miles east of the city centre, 5 km or 3 miles from Canary Wharf, this smaller convenient and modern airport is aimed at the business traveller. Flights are mainly to British cities and North European destinations.

Last year the Airport handled 60,500 aircraft and 1,684,545 passengers. In terms of annual passengers recent data has the Airport ranking 19th in UK that's 0.7% of the total country airports traffic, for air transport movements London City Airport ranked 12th. 3 million passengers

Links to the city centre are by taxi, tube/train, DLR or helicopter.
Train - Bus : There isn't a railway station at the airport but connections are made to the UK rail network (and underground network) by links to Canning Town and the Liverpool Street rail station.
The shuttle bus docks right outside the terminal with connections to the london underground and rail station for,Canning Town, Canary Wharf and Liverpool Street. Departures are every 10 minutes and the journey takes from 25 to 30 minutes.
Green bus: shuttle between the airport and Canning Town Station - ( rail and underground connections)
Blue bus : shuttle between the airport and Liverpool Street, via Canary Wharf - ( rail and underground connections)

Parking : Short Term - car park is close to the terminal with covered walkway and luggage trolleys.
Charges: £4 (0-1 hour), £6 (1-2 hours), £9 (2-5 hours), £22 (5-24 hour), £22 (additonal 24 hours).
Long Term - situated next to the short term car park a short walk to the terminal.

The DLR (Docklands Light Railway), London City Airport extension line project started in March 2003 and opened the 2nd of December 2005. DLR connection runs at approximately every ten minutes to Bank London underground (subway) right into the City and the business centre of Canary Wharf.
The elevated London City Airport Station is reached by DLR from Bank in about 22 minutes and from Canary Wharf 14 minutes.

Darwin Airlines offers the only direct route to Berne from London.


London Biggin Hill Airport is situated 12 miles to the south-east of the City of London and caters for business and training flights by executive jets with Airbus A319 and Boeing 737 types, carrying up to 120 or so passengers, helicopters flights charter for Central London, race days, Silvestone Grand Prix and corporate hospitality events. Biggin Hill to Battersea in just 6 minutes.

In September, the Air Show (the largest private air display in Europe) attracts 100,000 people featuring civilian, Royal Air Force, Royal Navy and foreign military past and present aircrafts display

Glasgow International Airport (GLA):The airport is located 8 miles (13km) from Glasgow city centre with around 50 daily flights to London Heathrow and Gatwick, the airport is the busiest in Scotland and handles around 8.5 million passengers a year. The airport is is 15 to 25 minutes drive from Glasgow City Centre and two miles from Paisley Gilmour Street the nearest rail station.


Rail: Paisley's Gilmour Street railway station is the nearest to the airport just two miles from the terminal,easily within reach by taxi or by the local bus services . Direct rail services run between Paisley Gilmour Street and Glasgow Central to Prestwick Airport ,travellers can (but check) get 50% off their First ScotRail tickets by producing flight tickets either at First ScotRail Booking Offices or from on-train staff on the day of travel.
A bus service links Aberdeen town centre and the airport. For further details contact FirstBus on 01224 650 065. Inclusive through tickets are available from all First ScotRail stations to Aberdeen Airport , including travel on Firstbus airport services. Ask when buying tickets.

Bus - coach : A regular Airport bus service (no. 905) leaves from North Hanover Street outside Glasgow Queen Street station; and from St. Vincent Street , near Glasgow Central Station. Services from Glasgow Airport leave from outside the Terminal building.

There is no early morning or late evening train service between the airport, Glasgow and Edinburgh but there is a bus service operated by the airport for scheduled flights not served by public transport.

The X99/X10 is a fast coach link between the airport, Glasgow or Edinburgh.The X99 bus service runs directly to the Airport Terminal from Buchanan Street Bus Station in Glasgow City Centre. The bus wats at stand 23 or 24 and departs for the Airport as early as 04.45am. The journey time is approximately 45 minutes

Taxis: are available at the front of the terminal building, a short walk from the UK arrivals , costs from the airport to Glasgow city centre is approximately £18 to £22.

Glasgow Prestwick (PIK) 34 miles south west of Glasgow city centre handles 2.5 million passengers a year. Ryanair offers low cost flights to London Stansted, Dublin, Paris Beauvais, Frankfurt Hahn, Brussels Charleroi and Oslo Torp.

Trains : with the new Gilmour Street line project extension will soon be served by its own railway station 80 metres from the check-in desks,
Trains to and from Glasgow every 30 minutes the journey is about 40 minutes. 

Bus - coach: Stagecoach Western Express coach services to Glasgow Buchanan Street Station operating every hour (every 30 minutes at peak times). Journey time is 45 minutes . Stagecoach Western Express Service X77 is a direct service that stops outside the airport and operates from Glasgow Buchanan Street directly to Glasgow Prestwick International Airport running every 30 to 60 minutes.

Edinburgh Turnhouse Airport (EDI) : Located seven miles the west of the city handles over 6 million passengers each year. Main Airlines : British Airways British Midland, Ryanair - Easyjet

Trains : There is no direct rail link

Bus - coach : Public service bus stops are located at stand 18 on the terminal forecourt road outside the UK arrivals building. A bus service (no.100) to the city centre and Edinburgh Waverley rail station operates every 15 minutes until 1930 on weekdays and then every hour thereafter. The journey time is 45 minutes.
